Edited 7 years agoMany have speculated that this mini-album was Goldie's unofficial 'apology' to his fans for the flop that was 'Saturnz Return', his long-awaited follow-up to Timeless that was released earlier that same year (1998). 'Ring Of Saturn' may have been Goldie's act of reassurance; letting those who were not moved by the LP that he was still very capable of delivering the goods.
The tracks themselves vary in quality. The opening track, a reworking of the much-loathed Goldie track, 'Mother', is a worthy effort. Gone are all the infinite strings and sweeps of the original. In is the powerful vocal and bassline. The result is a darker, heavier and (substantually) shorter version of Mother that is a lot more accessible.
Next up, we have Goldie's interpretation of the well-known classic, 'What You Won't Do For Love'. This track really has that trademark Goldie sound; The familiar breaks, the strings, the trumpets and the intantly recognisable voice of Diane 'Inner City Life' Charlamagne. Soothing, laid back summer music. Nice.
Track 3; This is where things start getting a little darker. 'Hyena L' is a dark and brooding bassline-driven track that really delivers. Definitely one of the highlights of this mini-album.
This dark vibe stays for the next 3 tracks which are all very similar in the sense that they are all rather noisy and repetative; Works that are really only to be appreciated by those serious dark dnb heads who like there their dnb in such a way. (EG: 'Kaiser Salsek' has a constant squeeking riff throughout that may become more than a little irritating to the average listener).
The final track is Doc Scott's 'Left Hand Man' remix of track 2. His version loses Diane Charlamagne's vocal, and instead uses the original version's catchy bassline to drive a darker and more 'dubby' affair. Nice, funky little number.
So, as a whole, does 'Ring Of Saturn' cut the mustard? Well, sort of. As a companion piece to Saturnz Return, it works tremendously and had these tracks originally been a part of 'Saturnz Return' upon it's original release, the reception to Goldie's second album would probably have been a lot warmer, as there would have been a wider selection of tracks and more diversity. As a stand-alone piece though, it's a decent yet uneven collection of tunes.
