One of the classic MTV Unplugged albums, along with Nirvana's Unplugged In New York and Alice In Chains' MTV Unplugged… and maybe Clapton Unplugged as well. The stripped back version of Like A Hurricane is both haunting and beautiful, and the fact that Young leaves out most of his most famous songs (no After The Gold Rush, Heart Of Gold, Old Man, Only Love, My My Hey Hey etc etc) actually only makes the record better.

All this music sounding great on a single record is possible because of the unplugged nature of the live performance. Vinyl record grooves are an analog representation of sound waves that are carved into the vinyl. Louder sounds, like bass, are cut deeper and wider, which requires more space on the record. Wider grooves also swing farther from side to side, so they need more room to avoid colliding with adjacent grooves. When taking this into consideration, the lack of constant lower bass elements allows for a greater number of grooves per side.Classical music albums often contain a ton of minutes of music because of this. I will say that the digital versions of Neil Young Unplugged are pretty good, but I prefer my vinyl recording.

I don't think Neil Young was very happy with this performance. Or the sound quality. Didn't he record it one night and then made everyone re-record it the following night as he was unhappy? I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see another pressing of this. I think it was digitally recorded, and it sounds a little thin as a consequence. I would love it if they could improve upon the sound. And issue it in a high quality lovely gatefold sleeve, it really does deserve it. This was my introduction to Old Shakey and absolutely love it. "Look out for my Love" is sublime.

Blimey, just seen the price on original copies of this!
Is it because it was a limited release?
Anyway, bought my copy in Camden Music and Video Exchange in about 1999 (still got the £2.99 price tag on!)
Great album, and along with Live Rust is my favourite Neil Young album.
          Transformer Man is a revelation!

It sounds wonderful. I've never understood why this one never got a wider release. It's an incredible album.

Is the red vinyl repress official? What is the sound quality?
