One of darkest most bleak sorrowful albums you can ever find in the territory of dark folk, industrial, avant-garde music.
It breaks your heart in two as soon as it enters with its encomed walk of shadowy rhythms and thick basses, It has solemnity and elegance, one that's depraved and causes panic. The music It has no mercy, it comes like an avalanche of self inflicting hatred, mixed with the accompaniments of the guitar strolls that demark like an atmosphere of delusions, the sampler voices of real events like chatting ghosts of sorrowful events and broken dreams and the mumbling monologues of a man in a dark alley which are the vocals of Gira.
It doesn't take much but simple acoustic guitar chords, looping rhythms made with bass lines, excerpts of piano, guitar, a drone background where everything gets summoned. That's one of the most powerful things of the album the simplicity to tell and narrate feelings whether with its mabtric like vocals, the recorded monologues or the general atmosphere generated by the sum of all instrumentation.
This work is really dark. Not in a kitsch kinda way, deriving directly into something otherworldly or ethereal but something vivid. It's like sorrowful tales of human failure, destruction, wastefulness and decadence. Drainland its about the exhaustion of human emotions, the sad results from the pain of the experience from existence. Soul pain. It's like a Bukowski tale after the most exciting things have happened to its characters, when all the bottles lie emptied, when the party is over, when the next night has arrived and the hangover has left its stains, when the Heroin addict returns to full conscience, when people lie broke in the street, when all dreams become impossible things and guilt and remorse and hate fills the eye. It's also like Virginia Woolf most bleak perspectives on life, cynical to the point of tears but oh so logic and real, so authentically humane.
Drainland is literature and poetry with the enhanced power of musicalization of those things said and unsaid. Because sometimes the music alone speaks volumes on what is happening in the field of the feelings.
Alll this is contained here. And in "Blind", the last track every other track gets a mirror to get watched. Look here in this black mirror of self realization and sad discovery. Here lies the Drainland in where humans, live and die.
