In reference to variant 2/ a 5th variant, MADE IN CANADA 3. Definitely an underrated gem. Excellent, open recording with so much space one could dance between the instruments. -
Edited one year agoI’m curious about this listing. The barcode is the same as r12829295 and my copy’s matrix / runout matches exactly. The only difference is my copy isn’t hand numbered. Was this really a Vinyl Me, Please release in 2018? Can anyone this? I don’t see anything jumping out in a Google search and nothing on the record or packaging indicates a VMP release.
ittedly, I don’t know what VMP releases from 2018 look like. To me, it’s a hand-numbered release that isn’t really ### of 550.

A simply phenomenal pressing of an underrated Ry Cooder album! The vinyl is flat, dead silent, and mastered perfectly with amazing bass and dynamics. The packaging is awesome with shiny metallic finishing on the whole gatefold and the jacket is heavy Stoughton tip-on style with poly sleeves and a cool D side etching to boot!
If you’re a fan of Latin beats, surf guitar, and tropical sounds and melodies, you should really give this album a try. In my mind, it’s kind of like a soundtrack to either Breaking Bad or Twin Peaks if they’d taken place south of the border in some nefarious tropical setting.
A truly fun and engaging listen from the master of classic world sounds—Ry Cooder—and the always interesting Manuel Galbán! Get one while they’re still available! -
This record and Chavez Ravine proves just how awesome Cooder's output was in the late 90's - early 00's. Of course Galban is amazing on this as well. Really hope this music gets the attention it deserves soon!

Edited 4 years agoAnother other-worldly transportational pressing from Nonesuch. If you don't have a fresh made mojito next to you while enjoying this album – I'm afraid that you may not be entirely entitled to your opinion. For once you're there my friend, you are in for a real treat. Is that the smell of guitar amp tubes tubes wafting over the mint and lime? Perhaps...I'm right there in the studio with these guys... and they are cooking.

Just when we thought that the era of the nostalgic Cuban music ended, Ry Cooder with the proof that he is still to big performance is capable of, together with the Veterans of the Buena Vista project. On Mambo Sinuendo is both producer Cooder as guitarist, this time in the good company of one guitar hero, Manuel Galbán. Galbán gained notoriety in the 1960s when he played with the Cuban vocal group Los Zafiros. On Mambo Sinuendo he and Cooder go even further back in time to songs from the fifties. With these two guitar virtuosos at the helm may not happen otherwise than on that very eloquent manner. On most of the songs we hear a Duane Eddy-like lounge guitar style, ed by the Orlando López, the bass drums of Jim Keltner and congas by Miguel Diaz. Together they make 1950s-music, that ever by Galbán was set in motion, but that Amazingly enough never got followed by others. In fact we are listening to music, which there never was, but had to hear. One more reason to now this plate to the heart.
