Notes
There are various different releases of "Set It Off".
The initial legitimate US pressing has the multi-color logo. As in 1984 this seminal record was a massive crossover hit out of the box, and demand for the record was so high, the label didn't bother with the cool artwork and label-copy when they needed to deal with a surprise hit on their hands, so they rushed out the second pressing with very basic lettering and no logo-artwork, on a yellow (and also on a blue) label.
These pressings were also cut at STERLING and have the same dead-wax inscriptions as the first pressings.
The bootlegger/counterfeiter who released 95% of Danny Krivit's edits, the "Loft Classics", as well as the "Garage Classics" series a.o., pressed a counterfeit with a red-label that copied, though not exactly, the lettering and fonts of the yellow-label pressing. He recorded it directly from the vinyl version of the second, yellow label pressing and increased the amount of treble when he had his own, "in-house" lacquer-cutter re-master from the original wax.
The red-label counterfeit was not mastered at Sterling and is not a legitimate product.

Back in the day, we called it electro funk , which branched into acid jazz but the backbone of this track is from jazz funk true fusion,a real masterpiece and was so underground it's a classic !

Is it Electro? Is it Boogie? Is it Funk? Is it House? Don't you just hate genre categories sometimes? Fu*k genres, it's a mixture of all four. A very groundbreaking release if ever there was one. -

No one ever talks about how Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - It Takes Two basically stole the beat from this classic, timeless Electro Funk record. Sampled by many, but the OG is still king. -

ittedly not that easily categorisable as a style as it featured two or three elements.
Regardless. Strafe's and Harlequin Four's versions are proper club classics and like both for slightly different occasions. Played throughout the eighties by DJs from all dance and electronic genres from hip hop to disco to house music warehouse pioneers. -
Edited 7 years agoYellow label bootleg has no (c) (p) before 1984 at the bottom. Oh well at least I only paid $5 for it. Better turn up the gain & turn up the treble. It sounds like it's recorded with the mics in the next room.

I have a red label version with the EDP and Sterling stamp...same font as yellow labels but has small inner hole. Does not look anything like the bootleg. What's up with that?
