Notes
Originally released as a 75-minute double LP with gatefold presentation in the USA, Canada and Japan, in the rest of the world only a 41-minute, 10-track single LP version was released (using same artwork, but losing the gatefold presentation and a booklet, and with notes and some photographs printed on inner sleeve). Interestingly, tracks were arranged very differently in the single LP version.
First CD release was marketed by Polydor in 1985, comprising the 10 tracks of the abridged international LP. The 75-minute version was not available on CD until the 1993 release of the 4-CD set of John Williams (4), London Symphony Orchestra - Star Wars Trilogy (The Original Soundtrack Anthology), that also included some (at that time) unreleased tracks.
The most comprehensive version so far (supposedly including the complete, remastered film score—although lacking at least an alternate version of the end credits that was included in the 1993 4-CD set) was released in 1997, coincidental with the "Special Edition" release of the film trilogy. This 2-CD set was re-released in 2004, 2007 (in the The Music Of Star Wars box set), 2015, and 2016 with different artwork.
In 2016, the original 1980 album was reissued on vinyl, including full artwork reproduction. It was also released on hi-res digital. In 2017, it was reissued again, on Walt Disney Records for the first time, in standard-res digital only.
On May 4, 2018, Walt Disney Records released a newly-remastered edition of the original 1980 album program on CD, digital , and streaming services (and on vinyl in 2020). This remaster was newly assembled from the highest-quality tapes available, rather than sourced from the existing 1980 album masters. This release marks the first release on CD of the complete 1980 soundtrack album.

A great early release album before the loudness war and heavy remastering era began. However, the CD issue of this release is heavily condensed with half the tracks removed leaving only 10 tracks in total. The original LP issue (US Only) was a double gatefold containing twice as many tracks as the European LP and CD issues.
Even more of an issue though is the fact that the producers of the CD have inadvertently put the tracks in the wrong order resulting in the main theme starting halfway through the album.....this is unforgivable! A similar listing order error occurred like this on the original Polydor CD release of Jimi Hendrix "Electric Ladyland"....Somebody didn't check the correct play order and instead took the track listing order from the continuous sequential play labels of the original LP where side 1 & 4 and 2 & 3 are shown on the labels. -
For a thorough analysis of this version of the soundtrack, I recommend seeking out Chris Malone's "Recording the Star Wars Saga", specifically p24-28.
As per Discogs review/comment guidelines, I'm not linking to it, but as of the date of this review it can be found at his website, Malone Digital. -
It’s John Williams. It’s Star Wars. You probably know what you’re getting into, but regardless, it’s solid. But music aside, this has possibly the coolest CD label artwork I’ve ever seen, and I wish more releases had stuff like this!
-
Guys, you've never heard the soundtrack until you've listened to an early pressing! The dynamics are insane! and the more you crank it, the better it gets. For classical music, it truly rocks!

Not an exceptionally dynamic recording, but a good keepsake of possibly the best Star Wars score ever. This pressing can be a little noisier than expected on some spots (specifically Side A of Disc 2) and overall it's very good. The current asking price of $100AUD+ is a little high, though. -
I buying this in the summer of 1980 the week it was released - just the week before the movie itself opened.
Always sounded good to me. The only issue is that the spindle hole is just slightly off-center with both discs. It always had the slightest warble noticeable in the longer sustained notes. -
Edited one year agoI saw this in the theatre as a 10 year old boy. Listening to this on vinyl is a treat beyond words. The dynamic range is off the charts! worth a listen on a good system.

Let's put aside the fact that I bought this for a third of the lowest price in here. This is an amazing pressing, very loud, dynamic, and the packaging is a delight on its own.

The production pics and liner notes in the gatefold are great, they're really fun to read. My two main complaints are that 1) the tracks seem to have been ordered at random and don't really follow the plot of the film and 2) the label with the cow on it doesn't sell me that this is a Star Wars record, I would've loved a custom label like most other soundtracks of this calibre. Otherwise, it's still a classic!
