ABBA – The Day Before You Came

It's a noisy pressing, lots of crackle. And my copy came with a defect - a little dimple on the A-side that causes 12 pops (one each rotation) during the second verse.

As someone else has pointed out, this is certainly not ABBA's usual stereotypical 70s pop. While it never came to fruition, the album this was recorded for, if it were to sound like this, might have been ABBA's greatest. The track is haunting with every note, the story it tells is normal but yet it's left incomplete, never telling what happens past the day in question that would cause the singer to treat it as such a halcyon time. It's not Dancing Queen, it's not Mamma Mia, it's much darker than that. A track like this from such an overplayed group is hard to come by, and while I've always been an ABBA fan, this track always stands out. The singer as the track comes to a close, working in harmony with the synthesisers, it gives me shivers every time. My favourite ABBA song by a long shot.

The original Polar pressing POS 1318 sounds fantastic. No other pressing sounds as clear and balanced as this one. Fantastic !

Their swansong really, and what a way to go! A haunting, synth driven 6 minute of epic proportion that in included a huge finger to everyone who wrote them off as kitsch, cheesy pop! This is the ultimate kitchen sink drama that takes something ordinary and turns it into art. It's kind of the ultimate loneliness song, desperate and laden with hints of OCD and traits of PTSD lurking between every monotonous drum beat and snare. It's utterly compelling. One of the bravest single releases ever!
