Notes
"Surrealistic Pillow" is the second album by the American rock band Jefferson Airplane, released by RCA Victor on February 1, 1967. It is the first album by the band with vocalist Grace Slick and drummer Spencer Dryden. The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard album chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. The album is considered to be one of the quintessential works of the early psychedelic rock and 1960s counterculture eras.
Original drummer Alexander "Skip" Spence had left the band in mid-1966. He was soon replaced by Dryden, an experienced Los Angeles jazz drummer and the half-nephew of Charlie Chaplin. New female vocalist Slick, formerly with another San Francisco rock band the Great Society, ed the Airplane in the fall of 1966. Slick, Dryden, male lead vocalist Marty Balin, guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Paul Kantner, lead guitarist (and occasional vocalist) Jorma Kaukonen, and bassist Jack Casady formed the core of the best-known line-up of the group, which remained stable until Dryden's departure in early 1970.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 146 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list. It was voted number 174 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums.
In January 2017, "Somebody to Love" received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, while "White Rabbit" received a platinum certification.

Has an entry been made for the KG (Kevin Gray) cut of this? I see there are entries for the Garland and Ingram cuts, but I can’t find the KG. Strange. Sounds INCREDIBLE. I’d do it, but haven’t the first clue how.

Edited 19 days agoConfirmed from the runout that this is my copy. Received it for my birthday in 1967. This record got a lot of play until about 1975, and it still sounds really good (except for the slight scratchiness in Coming Back to Me and between tracks). I bought a stereo copy years later, but this mono mix is excellent, and if you can find at least a VG+, nab it.

Classic is an understatement for this album, which blends crazy-good vocals with various styles of music. This album has Somebody to Love, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, and White Rabbit among its amazing tracks. Grace Slick shines throughout. Overall, it is one of my favorite records from Jefferson Airplane.

Mine is Australian mono release, but a promotional copy, "Not for sale" etc printed on label. Very floppy cover, gloss finish on front. Sounds good. -
I don't have other versions to compare it, but this one seems really good to me! It sounds really powerful, dynamic, wide and precise. The disc is then flat and silent.

Edited 3 months agoMatrix run out on mine is some symbol that looks like stairs going up in a circle, then a B in a circle, TPRS 4895, S in a circle, 132, some symbol that looks like a cross missing the middle, then a C.
Sounds pretty dang good to my ears! Nice pressing. -

My copy has T2PY 9332-1K and T2PY 9336-1K in the runouts like the UK orange label reissue, but it's the black label like the UK original. Any thoughts?
A refreshing listen having grown up with the US track list. Just need an original US mono now -
Edited 4 months agoThis stereo pressing is fun, with tasteful echo like Jefferson Airplane is playing in a chamber hall. Find a clean copy, it’s essential for the “spaciness” of this music.
