I seriously doubt that 15,000 copies of this were pressed, given how scarce it is. Only 35 discogs s claim to own a copy at the time of this writing.... -
Found a copy in excellent condition and the sound quality is perfect. Highly recommend picking this up. What a treasure Malcolm and this record is.

music sampling started with Halim El-Dabh in 1943 in Cairo, Egypt with a wire recorder.

The Vocal CD mix is slightly different as found on the Tommy Boy Promo vinyl. There is also another pressing on Sugar Hill Records (Sugar Hill All Stars/Malcolm X) which contains two more versions. -

Basically the same music but both mixes are different from the Tommy Boy release, both Vinyl and CD single. There is a different Mix on the Promo Vinyl (A Side ist different) and according to someone here on Discogs a Test Pressing exists which contains another different Mix.
Beside the different mixes I personally doubt that the Sugar Hill release has been pressed 15.000 times, even if this has been published on Billboard Magazine. The Sugar Hill pressing is not easy to get, if there were 15.000 copies it would be much easier to find... -
Not a particularly exciting record in my opinion, just as boring as all those Martin Luther King Jr. sampling acid house records from a few years later. And to remark on a previous comment, this is not the first "sampling" record ever, electronic music has been sampling since the 1960s that I know of, if that what was meant by "sampling record". Steve Reich, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Sugarhill Gang, hundreds more I don't care to type out or may even be aware of...

Edited 17 years agoThis is maybe the most essential moment for electronic dance music and truly masterpiece in itself. It's considered to be the first tune ever to use the DMX drum programming, and the first ever sampling record. There's everything in it - musical quality, technical innovation, message breaking the borders, excellent record cover... Top.

Not only is this a demonstration of the drum & percussion genius of Keith LeBlanc, it has more political, rhetorical power than most of Malcolm's recorded speeches. Sadly, the superb black & white cover photograph was not used when the 12" was released by Tommy Boy in the U.S.. LeBlanc *still* remains unacknowledged for his towering body of work and massive influence. And Malcolm X, were he not cut down in the prime of his life, would have gone on to exert political power and create social change that one can only imagine-and the possibilities are extraordinary.
