Substance was the first widely released New Order compilation. Issued as a 12-track double LP, a 12-, 24- or 28-track double cassette, a 24-track double CD, and a 24-track double DAT, the compilation featured original 12" singles and B-sides, with a few exceptions.
"Ceremony" is the 1981 re-recorded version with Gillian Gilbert, "Temptation" and "Confusion" are May 1987 re-recordings, and "Subculture", "Shellshock", and "Hurt" are edited versions; CD and DAT copies additionally contain a version of "The Perfect Kiss" where the climactic finale is edited down by 44 seconds. These alterations were implemented due to storage limitations of physical media in 1987, and have remained in place on all reissues. The 2023 remaster restores "The Perfect Kiss" to its full length but leaves the other edits intact.
Additionally, all of the 24- or 28-track editions confuse the song titles "Cries and Whispers" and "Mesh" (owing to the tracks being improperly ordered on the rear sleeve for the 12" release of "Everything's Gone Green" in 1981), misname "The Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-Culture" "Perfect Kiss" and "Subculture" (respectively), and place A-sides "Procession" and "Murder" on the second CD/DAT, which is otherwise relegated to B-sides; the latter anomaly is not present on cassette copies.

Edited 2 months agoDoesn't sound as good as the CD I have from the early 90's. Not sure why somebody put digital compression on several songs on this "re-issue." A lot of songs sound bottom heavy in the bass region and (as another writer put it) applied the "smiley face" EQ is on almost every track which causes a lot more fatigue to settle in on songs that should sound cleaner. Inferior vinyl format aside, my copy was pretty noisy for a BRAND NEW record. I cleaned it, did my typical vacuum cleaning for even new Vinyl, and it still irked me a bit considering how much thrift vinyl I have sitting around. Editing my own needle drop transfer recording was sort of a nightmare because I had to use the Expanded CD version to isolate where the first tracks on every side actually started playing. Extremely overpriced for what is essentially a downgrade of the CD version they sold decades ago with more tracks and a better mix. Very unfortunate to pay nearly 50 USD for a vinyl that still doesn't sound as good as a CD, but then again it does have Perfect Kiss on here and that sounds really good so it's sort of a toss-up to be honest.

I was fortunate to pick this up last week after years of looking - perfect timing after seeing them live at Sydney Opera House at the weekend. I can safely say it was worth the wait...I have 3 other versions of this (including the recent rerelease and a UK original) and this on listening, this version is revealing hidden depths that I have not heard from these records before. Crystal clear clarity and LOUD too. This is the definitive version of this record. Worth seeking out... -

The most satisfying part of this reissue is that people trying to sell the former reissues for $100+ can take them and stick them where the sun don't shine. -
one of the defining albums (well, compilations) of the 80s hands down! excellent songs from beginning to end.
this pressing sounds phe-nom-e-nal, even at ear-deafening levels! little bit of sibilance near the end of true faith but I might just need to clean it. Highly recommended! -
This is sufficient. I picked my copy up while traveling and I am just glad it survived the trip home. Memories abound. -
