Journey's eleventh album, released in October of 1996, Journey's first album in ten years as well as the last album to feature frontman Steve Perry to date. Trial By Fire served as a reunion of the band's line-up during their most successful period of 1981-1983, and style-wise presents slightly less hook-heavy numbers and more abstract, spiritual lyrics. Trial By Fire was very successful on release, reaching #3 on the Billboard charts, and spawning a Top 20 single (If He Should Break Your Heart" were released as singles as well, but missed the Billboard Top 100, although "Message Of Love" and "Can't Tame The Lion" reached #18 and #33 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart respectively, and "If He Should Break Your Heart" reached #21 on the Billboard AC Chart and was a Top 20 in Canada. A music video was produced for "When You Love A Woman".
Trial By Fire contains a "hidden" track, "Baby I'm Leaving You": furthermore, the Japanese pressing of the album contained a bonus track, "I Can See It In Your Eyes". The album was re-released in 2006 with "I Can See It In Your Eyes" included in all pressings and "Baby I'm Leaving You" added to the track listing.
Steve Perry would retire from the band after a dispute about touring for the album while Perry was recovering from an operation, and would be replaced by Steve Augeri.

A fine example of how there are a great number of Sony manufactured tapes out there will sound great for one song and then stop playing altogether. I've noticed that the probability of this is impossible to dictate, as my mint copy of this album stopped playing a few songs in while another Sony cassette I own, Love Deluxe by Sade looks incredibly beat up yet plays through completely. -
Sony Music should put this out as a deluxe gatefold double vinyl with all the bonus tracks.
16 songs, 4 on each side. Have Chris Bellman do a good vinyl mastering, or Ryan Smith.
Their last album with Steve Perry, it really deserves such a release. -

My all time favorite journey album, musically brilliant. The sound really stands out from their other records, classic soft rock with some elements of 90s new age and ambient. Really sad there hasn’t been a vinyl release yet, hopefully one day CBS/Sony will release the entire album on vinyl. But luckily for now two tracks “Message of love” and “when you love a women” exist on a 45. -
