One of the dopest hiphop ts of all time! Don't let nobody tell you differently. This is peak Gold Skool era rap with Chuck D in his prime backed by heavy James Brown sampling and boomin' drum programming by hiphop innovators The Bomb Squad. A must have for any boombap aficionado.

Vocally great track but that squeaking in the background ruins it for me.

More than a Hip Hop anthem, “Don’t Believe The Hype” became a principle for a whole generation not only because of the one’s attitude toward music or even art in general, but towards life. Hip Hop would never be the same after this twelve inch, and a special thanks must be given to The Bomb Squad team, the Flavor Flav’s lyrics in “Don’t Believe The Hype”, and Chuck D’s one in “The Rhythm, The Rebel” (which also became a sort of principle of a underground artistic behavior in the realm of the dance music). I hope this legacy can influence the new generations, so that they can rebel themselves against trendy, hype and expendable mainstream sounds.

Don't believe the hype was all about the press putting hype into things, and Chuck was right, don't believe everything you read in the papers. Some great lyrics, this song tells you a tale from start to finish, and a great combo with Chuck and Terminator. Some nice scratching and samples in this track too. Some heavy remixes too.
