One of ABBA's biggest hits, but originally not even intended for single release. The group's success in Australia with "I Do, I Do" created huge demand for a follow-up single. After first refusing, Polar reluctantly agreed and "Mamma Mia" was released. It became a huge hit - after which the single was released worldwide.

"Intermezzo No. 1" appears as B-side on most releases, but "Tropical Loveland" on almost as many. The latter appeared as B-side on many issues of the next single, "Fernando". That single's 'main' B-side "Hey, Hey Helen" appeared as B-side on some versions of "Mamma Mia", however. Argentina and Poland used "SOS", Turkey "Bang-A-Boomerang" and Japan the early "People Need Love" (and a unique cover with a drawing). South Africa curiously released two versions, with "Man In The Middle" and "Hey, Hey Helen" as B-sides.

The 1980 Spanish version was released as a promo 7" in the U.S.

There is also a variant with a darker shade of yellow. The most obvious difference is that the first "B" in ABBA is reversed on the label
