His strongest, richest spirit solo album, the Budapest Concert, may reach this level. -

Vibrant and compelling. This is where Jarrett shines and sets himself apart from mere piano players! -

In his first solo concert recording in five years, Keith Jarrett once again makes history. The La Scala concert was the first recital ever given by an improvising musician in the world's most famous opera house. The concert - an instant press sensation - comprises two moving sets of solo improvisation, and Jarrett's most loved encore: the classic tune "Over the Rainbow." -

La Scala is the concert venue where these piano pieces were performed. Parts 1 & 2 can be a little frustrating to listen to, as we find Keith alternating between genius and constipated creativity. Apparently that's just what he is like at concerts: He would improvise in outbursts of brilliance, but when creativity gets jammed up, he would get up, storm around the stage, mumble furiously, and then get back to the piano and all of a sudden, the genius is back. Despite his quirks, nobody doubts Keith's prowess as a pianist (check out his discography!), and Over The Rainbow cements his place as a talent. His delicate rendition of the old classic could bring tears to eyes with its natural rubato and heart-breaking longingness. To me, the highlight of this CD is definitely Over The Rainbow, as well as the inspiring liner notes.
