Denis Preston had supervised the recordings of many famous British jazz recordings in the 1950s (mainly whilst at Pye) labels, and product was licensed to the UK majors.

The building that housed the studio was erected in 1902 by William Flodthart, a benevolent South African diamond millionaire who wanted to provide a place where struggling painters could work. The main recording studio was originally a squash court, and the control room the smokers room.

The studio closed in September 2006, and subsequently turned into private housing.

I have just come across a 7" record the label says 'A LANSDOWNE RECORDING' there are no matrix stamped on the vinyl. The record has a typed "IN A PURPLE MIST" one side and the other side says "BONGO" which has been crossed out and written is ERUPTION. Does anyone know who this is by the record is like Shellac its very thick ? At the top on the Eruption side it says Morgan Music Ltd, 169 High Road, Willesden, NW10.

I'm pretty certain I just watched a property TV programme here in the UK, with the building that used to house the now closed infamous Lansdowne Studios featured in it...

Channel 4, "Grand Designs" presented by Kevin McCloud, series 12 episode 6 "The Edwardian Artist's Studio", first broadcast 9 to 10pm, Wed 24 Oct 2012.

"Audrey and Jeff Lovelock plan to transform a listed 13-level Edwardian artists studio in West London into a bespoke, subterranean home complete with wine cellar. Can they do it?"

They literally stripped-out two massive underground floors, as the ground level was minimal – hence a several £m job. So it's now all high-end Holland Park housing, such is generally the way for such buildings in fairly exclusive areas of London.

Just one of those mildly interesting future historical curious connections for the database!
