Shut Up And Dance Records

Profile:

Pioneering British breakbeat label, established by Smiley in London in 1989.

Company credits are sometimes to Shut Up And Dance Records umbrella.

In 1986, Smiley, PJ, DJ Hype formed a sound system called Heatwave and organised illegal raves back, with Smiley & PJ rapping. Unable to get a record deal, they started their own label, the name of which was taken from the title of one of the songs on their demo tape.

Their first release was was sold from the boot of PJ’s car, before success brought expansion, a proper distribution deal and even number 2 in the UK singles chart with Raving I'm Raving.

Does anyone know how many copies of SUAD 38 (Peter Bouncer - Let My Music) were pressed? I'm guessing it was withdrawn with not many existing?

Such a shame SUAD didn't release anything in 1993. . . But there were reasons ... SUAD like IBIZA RECORDS were very integral to how it's done properly ... Misty eyed times haha.... ;)

Fantastic innovative label, pioneers of the hardcore sound for sure!
Does anybody know what happened to the missing releases please (SUAD 2 and SUAD 38)??

Shut Up & Dance Records really helped pushed the envelope when it came to the breakbeat rave sound. SUAD were one of the first to start incorporating breakbeats into their productions. Genius idea, and 1990-1992 everyone was using breakbeats.

The label has had so many good records and some interesting artists. Like many good labels, the artists were close, like family, and SUAD has a distinct style. You can tell a Ragga Twins track a mile off, or a Shut Up & Dance production.

SUAD's output erred on the more darker side of rave, and i suppose you could say, less cheesy. I think the "Raving I'm Raving" track really screwed PJ & Smiley and their label real bad.

My favourite track on the label? I like Shut Up & Dance "Dance Before The Police Come" (Remix) - timeless.

They had an idea, a vision, an output, and united people at a time when it was needed here in the UK.

Pioneering? I should most definately say so.
