WOMAD Records

Profile:

Use ONLY when WOMAD Records is explicitly mentioned.

Originally created to raise funds for an initially financially poor debut festival in 1982 by releasing some recordings from that festival and to benefit and fund future festivals and events, the WOMAD organisation evolved to provide a periodic showcase of world artists, in the form of a newsletter accompanied by a vinyl record. This endeavour was the foundation of Womad Select Africa.

'World of Music, Arts and Dance' is an organization founded in 1980 by Peter Gabriel, Thomas Brooman and Bob Hooton on the basis that many others would share their enthusiasm for music from other cultures, if only they had the opportunity to listen to some of the global sounds. This then developed into large festivals incorporating music from all over the world.
