Kelly moved to the west coast and took her shop whith her as far as I know. But yes Milk used to be here, I could see the old location out my bedroom window.

I made it to Jerry's a few months ago- serious 2nd hand digging spot just from the size of their inventory. One huge room for Jazz, and the other even bigger room for everything else - I picked up some cheap Tommy Boy electro, saw a handful of techno/house records, but you're more likely to find older stuff- disco, rock, soul, etc. Plus a lot cleaner and more organized than most 2nd hand places.

    :)

Yeah, Jerrys is sort of a nationaly known diggin spot. I have pulled alot of gold out of that place. I miss the days of the 12" room in the back of the store, he used to have a whole room of tens of thousands of unsorted 12's. I used to be in that room for hours.

  • Show this post
A shame there's no back room now, sounds like good pickings. I only had an hour or so to look around there, but could have easily spent a few more ;)

I am actually quite interested in Pittsburgh. I know there are still hundreds of titles that exist in the racks and whats the recent verdict on these shops?

    Hi Frankie
Attic Records used to be my secrete spot to find calssic garage, disco, and techno. Unfortunatly they suffered a devastating flood about a year ago and lost 6 dumpsters (The long kind) full of records. They lost all of what was in there basement and the first 3 feet at ground level. They have been rebuilding for the last year.

  • Show this post
Funny thing is that I was almost in that flood. I woke up and decided to go record shopping. I was planing to go to the attic but decided I didnt feel like walking there in the rain. I went to Jerrys that day.

holy shit those pics of Attic Records are fucked up. I was in that shop ealrier that year and found a nice stack of really good records. One of the owners was really cool as well.

    that picture makes me sad.

Attic Records still has a 12" room though that is pretty massive. Take a helmet with a light mounted on it with you (no joke). The shelves are ceiling high and there's not much room between them either. I'm glad they decided to stick in Millvale and rebuild. So many other business owners were hit so hard in the area, they were unable to afford to do so. It's really sad. If you do go to Attic, walk around the corner and stop here. A little taste of Paris in the middle of Millvale.

There are some other places in Pgh as well. This one always misses out on the big record store listings. The owner has his vinyl priced a little high but he's pretty friendly so I imagine he could be talked down if you're good at that sort of thing.

Even though Paul's Compact Discs sells mainly...er... discs, they also have a small electronic section where they regularly have stuff on Bpitch Control, Kompakt, Axis, Max Ernst, CCO, etc.)

I found a random 12" on Trax here this weekend and some other Plastic City stuff, but it's horribly disorganized and the family that owns it is sketchy. Hard to figure out their pricing system and they may try to rip you off. Consider yourself forewarned. However, if you have time, don't mind moving things around and are good about bargaining, try it out.

    One question -

Who has had the privilege or $$ to go to Jerry's warehouse? I've heard that (urban legend/rumor?) that the warehouse is stacked with good stuff.

  • Show this post
I have heared the rumors but havnt actually met anyone who has been to the warehouse.

    PS Have we met?

  • Show this post
I don't think so. I was living in DC during Pgh's heydey of techno madness :) awhile back. Now, I'm back in the 'burgh for the past few years.

Guess I should also add some (possibly) sad news. Heard from a clerk at Jerry's that if he doesn't get a buyer by Sept06 he will start the process of liquidation/closing the store. Hopefully a buyer will be found - it would be so sad if Jerry's were to close. It really is an institution here.

Though I'm sure the liquidation would be fun in the short-term, long-term it would suck, quite frankly.

  • Show this post
Jerry has been saying he's closing for years, but I really think he means it this time. The last 3 times I was there, he mentioned it. Jerrys closing will truly be a sad day in Pittsburgh.

  • Show this post
    Yep, it's official now. :(

  • Show this post
I guess there is always the possibility of someone purchasing the business. Does Paul's Compact Discs still have the "if we're making a profit, we're doing something wrong" motto on their receipts? Would seem like a perfect match :)

The three or four like-minded businesses might be the more realistic solution. Someone in Pittsburgh actually beat him to it. They do sell used vinyl, but the selection is of the thrift shop variety though they use Get Hip! for new vinyl. The best part is the vintage stereo equipment - reasonably priced and in good condition. They're very friendly about hooking up speakers, receivers, etc.

  • Show this post
The last few times I've been there, Jerry was talking to potential buyers. I hope Jerrys dosnt close :(

  • Show this post
I thought this good news was worth posting - Jerry's will be staying open - the sale is off and the dude in Jersey can go $#$#&*&*!

    :)

It's going to be a co-op with Heads Together across the street moving in as well as Dave's Music Mine. If this is the model that will keep the store open, good for these guys for pooling together.

A new record store, Vinyl Remains, opened up in Mt. Lebanon not too long ago. It's a small store, but they have a really nice selection of records. Mainly old stuff, but they also have some local music there as well. They also sell cassettes and local artist work I'm pretty sure. It's a little overpriced, but I have not regretted a single purchase I've made there. And if you're curious, the records I've gotten there are:
'Eat to the Beat' - Blondie
    'Boston' - Boston
'Never Let Me Down' - David Bowie
'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' - Derek and the Dominos
'Frampton Comes Alive!' - Peter Frampton
'Atom Heart Mother' - Pink Floyd
