Hey folks,
Some updates went live for the Tracks beta functionality right now!
Tracks on Releases are now linked to their Composition page, and Compositions can now be migrated to others on the Artist Tracks page, in order that everyone can help tidy up the groupings.
You can get an overview of 'Tracks' here.
You can read more about the new Tracks functionality at: How to edit Composition Titles, How to migrate Tracks from duplicate Compositions
There is a survey on all the Beta Tracks pages that you can use to give us your . You can also ask questions etc as usual in this thread.
Thanks! -

You can do this, instructions are at https://.discogs.versitio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006264154-How-to-migrate-Tracks-from-duplicate-Compositions
Matching tracks automatically is actually quite involved, which is why you see duplicate Compositions, and why we need people like you to help migrate the duplicate compositions :-)

Two more bugs I encountered, in addition to the above:
- Sometimes, when I want to open the dropdown menu for one song, it opens the one for the song after it.

It would be nice to have access to composers in the list of Compositions, to check same track title vs. different composer(s) -

For some, the name of the functionality "Tracks" might be confusing because it is more about compositions. A track with at title like "This Is A Track (Original Mix)" a different track would often be considered to be a different track than "This Is A Track (Someone's Remix)" but it's still listed under the same composition.

I'm wondering what the correcting of track titles is supposed to do. If I press the 'Edit' link next to a track title, the view goes to an edit mode and when I hover the mouse above the title it says 'Click to edit Title'. I notice that for tracks that only have one release nothing happens. But for the ones that have the track on more than one release, I get an option to 'correct' the title.
An example, ABBA's "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" from 1975. That's the original/official/correct title and you can guess that all kinds of variations from that have been used over the years! Over 20 are shown in the list. There's "I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do" on 20 releases. That's probably the way it appears on them, should it be corrected - and does this correction also change the release page? Now when I click the title nothing happens, except the list updates and the "I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do" disappears altogether! Something is seriously wrong here. -

This becomes a little tricky when two separate tracks are inappropriately listed as combined on a release. For example, "Aubade" and "And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey" are separate tracks on a 1985 Spanish re-release.
"And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey" is listed as a separate composition:
https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/76f6f728-b300-4723-861e-0e47e9b35b6b-And-I-Am-Not-Like-Other-Birds-Of-Prey
However, "Aubade" is collected under 8 compositions each with a combined title, which include the incorrectly combined tracks, e.g. "Aubade (And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey)":
https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/6ce038f6-13ef-467f-accd-17bc8539a91a-Aubade-And-I-Am-Not-Like-Other-Birds-Of-Prey
"Aubade" therefore never exists on its own as a composition in discogs. Even if compositions where this track is listed separately were split off from the other compositions, there would still be a whole heap of "Aubade"s that remain incorrectly combined with "And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey" under a separate composition. -

It looks like we will have to add uncredited written-by credits for tracks like this, in order to fix under which composition the track is listed. For instance, Supertramp's live cover of "All Along The Watchtower" is credited to them, not to Bob Dylan, because there's no writing credits on that release.
Is there currently a way to merge compositions that don't have a written-by credit and don't share the main artist?
Example: tracks from The Fantômas Melvins Big Band - Millennium Monsterwork 2000 are not currently linked to Melvins (Night Goat, Hooch, etc)
This will be essential if "This project is part of the bigger vision to make Discogs the biggest and most comprehensive music database in the world." (https://.discogs.versitio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006294054-Overview-of-the-Tracks-Feature ) -

I'm still failing to understand what Composition means.
From: https://.discogs.versitio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006294054-Overview-of-the-Tracks-Feature
A ‘Composition’ is the conceptual blueprint for piece of music, for example the musical score, the lyrics, the chords etc. Every Composition will appear on one or more releases. ‘Tracks’ are the physical manifestation of a Composition on a release. If an artist writes one Composition that appears on two different releases, then that Composition has been released as two different Tracks on two different releases.

It needs to be added that a Composition is not limited to one Artist, ie. several Artists can record their own versions of the same composition (cover version).
I just succesfully migrated almost all tracks for Tanita Tikaram. With only 131 Compositions in the databased, it was doable from the one complete view.
I'm wondering if "Twist For Tanita" should be migrated to "Twist In My Sobriety". The former appears on one bootleg 12" only where it's "Unofficial remix/rework of Tanita Tikaram's Twist In My Sobriety.". There is no writer info. My logic says this is the same 'Composition', even if the title has been changed, much like classical titles mentioned above. Can I take another 's word that it's the same, without an actual credit (I have no reason to suspect it's incorrect)? Obviously I don't know how widely accepted the note is since there's no owner data available any more for unofficial releases.
There is a track titled "Untitled" in The Cappuccino Songs which IMO belongs with the composition "I Like This".

I've discovered an interesting situation regarding cover versions. https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/dd22507d-50e3-4df7-9a1e-450065476c94-Dont-You-Lie-To-Me . It has a few blues covers, and a fair few rock covers.
Supertramp did a live cover on two of their live albums, It Was The Best Of Times appear under this composition.
However, there was Hudson Whittaker.)
*EDIT: Sorry, I've now migrated all the tracks listed under this composition, so this composition no longer exists.
A similar situation exists for the cover by https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/125e460e-8ef4-49fb-a96b-abc9c7c0771d-Dont-You-Lie-To-Me .

This situation can be remedied for an artist like Supertramp, where it has this song listed on Supertramp's composition page under the two different compositions, one correctly attributed (*I've made this fix already). However, for David "Honeyboy" Edwards, his cover of the song is listed under only the one composition, which is misattributed. Under the current arrangements, it doesn't seem that this can be fixed. -

These credits should be just for the tracks on the CD.
Actually I can't see where the Valentine Rohypnol credit is written.
But assuming it's there and it is for the DVD what should be done with it? Can it be made unlinked?
(OK, it seems it appears in the video.) -

In case people are still befuddled about the difference between a track and a composition (I'm not sure if that's what's confusing you), think of them like:
still not understand how this works
track ≡ release
composition ≡ master release
Composition contains all the versions of a song ever recorded, in theory. The problem is we have multiple compositions for the same track (using the analogy above, multiple "master releases" for the same "release"). We need to combine all those "masters" (i.e. compositions).
I've noticed something odd in investigating your conundrum. When I click on your first link, the image on the Bee Gees - Idea. -

I think it would be great if, when locking at a composition/track, it was possible to se who the main artist of the release is. Especially on tracks that many different artists have recorded versions/covers of

i think i got it...
go to the Bee Gees profile
on the right hand side is a link: "TRACKS"
scroll to :
I've Come Back1 Track 1983
I've Decided To The Air Force 38 Tracks 1968
I've Decided To The Airforce 24 Tracks 1968
I've Decided To The Airforce = 空軍パイロット 2 Tracks
I've Got A Message To You 3 Tracks
checkbox all 3
ⓧI've Decided To The Air Force 38 Tracks 1968
ⓧI've Decided To The Airforce 24 Tracks 1968
ⓧI've Decided To The Airforce = 空軍パイロット 2 Tracks
scroll back to the top
there is "Editing 3 Compositions ▼"
hit the triangle and choose from the dropdown the "Migrate All Tracks..." option
a new window opens:
choose (on the right a mouseover "SELECT" btutton) the one which ist the most correct (first) release
[i selected "I've Decided To The Air Force 38 Tracks 1968"]
and "save changes" (with a explanation in the required field)
done
edit: (i did it already and) now the list is shorter = the tracks are merged
I've Come Back 1 Track 1983

Loving this feature so far and I can see the potential with a few kinks worked out.
Is there a way to unlink a composer that is not a composer of the track?
One example is this track: https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/ff4da205-eaae-4a96-8f11-3d24e0849095-The-Bonds-Of-Melody
DJ Noriken is the composer, but DJ 490 gets credited as well for some reason. I guess it is because of the generic composer credit on the album that it is originally released on, which gives a generic credit to DJ 490 and DJ Noriken, but it is solely DJ Noriken's track.
Another thing is, is it possible to link two tracks made by two different artists? A scenario I'm facing right now is that the same track is released under two aliases with different names. One example is a track called 最破 released both under the Karatechno alias and the Phrozen Crew 97 alias. They are the same composition, although one a bit shorter than the other, but I haven't found a way to link them yet. -

Keep hitting the Saving button it should go through eventually. Encountered different error messages while migrating larger compositions, even if it remains red the Saving button gets reactivated and hitting it 2 or 3 or 6 times ends up saving the whole migration. -

good side effect is now you can spot easier incorrect spell tracks names that you might miss when looking at a whole long tracks list -

I'm a little confused how this works, but I noticed that some tracks from bands I used to play in are compositions by 'Various' instead of the actual artist, is it possible to fix that? -

Does anyone know a way to enter a release credit (written by, performer [original music by]) that should NOT be linking to any tracks in the track listing (presumably it's for incidental music that is not listed.)?
I don't think moving it to Notes is allowed. I've tried a naughty hack and entered a non existent track position but if there's a better way... -

Check the releases and see if you can find where it comes from.
Is the song on a compilation with main artist Various but no track artist entered, for instance? -

It's not all tracks from this release that have that though, it seems only songs that only appear on that particular release.
It kind of does the same thing with split releases, it credits the songs to both main artists instead of the track artist: https://discogs.versitio.com/composition/4a4423ea-ded9-4679-8939-65d7cf28c3ac-Stonecold-Snowball -

Correctly unfortunately
A big mess, especially with classic recordings, as these are often divided into two key works. -

So why would (or should) an index track artist not apply to the parts? -

"Untitled" is an obvious problem.
Track 12 on Disintegration is actually titled "Untitled".
And a prolific noise artist like Wolf Eyes, with *almost* a thousand untitled tracks is going be interesting to sort. -

So why would (or should) an index track artist not apply to the parts?
Because "Allegro" is not a track by a composer, but a name for the speed of a part of the track.
